Sometimes a person can tell if someone is infected by seeing the sores. But a person with herpes can still be contagious even when sores are not present.You can reduce your risk of getting herpes by using condoms during sex play. But because it’s spread by skin-to-skin contact, there’s still a risk, especially if you or your partner has visible sores.If you or your partner has an outbreak of sores or think you may be getting an outbreak, it’s suggested that you abstain from sex play and visit your health center for an exam and STD test.
